Supporting Friends and Family Impacted by Suicide
Did you know?
• 8.6 Australians die every day by suicide. That’s more than double the road toll (ABS, 2021).
• 75% of those who take their own life are male (ABS, 2021).
• An unknown number of Australians attempt suicide every year, with some estimates suggesting this figure may be over 65,000 (Slade et al, 2009).
• Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians between the ages of 15 and 44 (AIHW, 2022a).
• Beyond the tragic loss of the person, the impact of suicide deaths are felt by up to 135 people, including family members, work colleagues, friends, first responders at the time of death (Cerel et al, 2019).

Paul Burke - Bio
Paul is an accountant, business advisor and champion of community led suicide prevention and mental health initiatives. A committed Christian, Paul and his wife Jenny have served in a range of church leadership and ministry roles. Paul has also served in leadership roles in several community organisations including Rotary.
Paul’s involvement in the area of suicide prevention and mental health followed challenges his family experienced. He became a Management Committee member of Whitsunday Suicide Prevention Network or WSPN in 2017. Started in 2015, WSPN is one of over 130 suicide prevention networks around Australia supported by Wesley Mission. In its seven years of operation, WSPN has supported the introduction of a number of initiatives which have significantly increased awareness of, support for and response to mental health issues to reduce suicide and provide care and support to those impacted by suicide in the Whitsunday Region.
After many years in the Whitsundays, Paul and Jenny moved to Penrith early in 2022 to be closer to their family.
Keen to continue his involvement in suicide prevention and mental health, Paul is championing a new initiative with One Church Penrith focusing on suicide prevention and mental health initiatives for Penrith City, especially for youth.
Paul is a Mental Health First Aider and a Certified Resilience First Aid Responder.
Paul’s purpose in life is to help better the lives of other people.
Paul and Jenny have 4 children and 4 adorable grandchildren.
In his spare time, Paul enjoys playing with his grandchildren, walking and reading.
